Gifting ideas for kids


How often it is that you search for an ideal gift for kids and are simply stumped by dizzying number of choices? Well here I have made a systematic bouquet of choices for you to pick from :

1. Clothes - Clothes and accessories are the most common choice of gifts, we have a wide range of styles to choose from and they are available for all the age groups.

Words to the wise, toddlers will outgrow these dresses within 6 months, so you should be also be aware of whether the clothes will be utilised. Also avoid too frilly or fancy clothes for toddlers as they are very moody and they hate clothes which are not comfy. Also it's very difficult to get them in those clothes. 

Other common gifting ideas include books, soft toys and games. Actually I was kind of shocked by the variety of toys and games available in the market all in small budget. And I almost went crazy looking at all these cutest looking dolls.....

It is a good idea to encourage outdoor sports from a very young age because it keeps their mind balanced and supports healthy stress coping mechanisms apart from physical activity. You get cool tennis sets and many such sport equipment for kids starting from 400 approximately.

Moreover looking at those board games made me wish I was a kid again.... We, the 90s kids were very lucky to have grown up playing board games like Monopoly, Uno, Scrabble, Brainvita, the simpleton yet most enjoyed- snakes and ladders etc etc

But if you want to gift them something which ignites their imagination and creativity, then you would be surprised by the number of choices. These toys happen to be very educative, at the same time not being very hard on your pockets.

One of the basic toys that help toddlers identify color, size and sequence. There are many similar sets in same range with additional features like letters, numbers and shapes.

Tickle your kid's musical bone with the simple xylophone. You also get miniaturised versions of many musical instruments like kid guitar, mini piano etc etc. Building blocks and dollhouses are also an attractive options.

There are more complex building kits available for the budding architect

There are Scientist kits too for kids between 5 to 10 years to introduce them to basic scientific concepts like evaporation, magnetism, electricity etc

There's even a Solar set which comprises of a simple solar powered mini gadget sets.

Have you ever thought that the current generation of kids is exposed too much to mobiles and computers and it is eroding their minds. Well here are some harmless substitutes


There are also excellent DIY kits especially art kits available on Amazon and Flipkart. Just brought a stamp art kit and Unicorn stamp kit...these kits inspire creative and arty side of your kids as small as a five year old.

Important precautions :

These are some basic points which need to be taken care of while playing, irrespective of whether you gift them any of the following items. Caution kids about proper conduct while playing and how it should not be used to harm anyone. Also you need to monitor the time they spend playing. Also it goes without saying that any product with small parts are not advisable for kids below 4 years.

Well, there goes the concluding part of the list. I have prepared this list after parsing through a lot of online sites like Amazon, Flipkart and Paytm keeping in mind that none of them go above 1000 Rs. Forgotten foods - Sambhar soppu

It's one of the lesser known leafy vegetables is the Sambhar soppu or Doddpatre leaves or Sambrani leaves or the Mexican mint (Scientific name Plectranthus amboinicus). Mum recently tried a new recipe of curry of these and wasn't it utterly delicious. The succulent leaves have a super spicy aroma that fills up the whole room. Also known as the Indian oregano, it has great medicinal properties. And its very easy to grow. Any leafy joint of the succulent stem can be grown into a plant. Grows easily and quickly even in dearth of sunlight. Strange that inspite of these properties, its hardly found in our veggie markets. We had this plant growing in our balcony for as long as I can remember. But we never tried any recipes of it. Until now.... There are loads of recipes available on YouTube, but we South Indians have a few standard recipes : 1. Chutney - A finely ground paste of Sambhar soppu, green mirchi, onion/garlic.
